On Big Good Dildos, I also focus on the people who make the XXL toys I test. Their approach, their design choices, and their relationship to the body and pleasure deserve to be explored just as much as the objects themselves. That’s the whole point of this interview series: giving a voice to creators who are reshaping the market in their own way.
This time, I spoke with HumpToy — a French artisanal brand offering an unapologetic alternative to traditional sex toy standards. Run by a single person, the project stands out for its abstract shapes, impeccable materials, and rejection of any imposed narrative. Each piece is handmade, with rare attention to safety, ethics, and freedom of use.
In this conversation, Kenza talks about how the project started, how she creates, her relationship with social media… and the importance of offering objects that leave room for imagination.
HumpToy: Abstract Shapes, Solo Crafting, and Free Pleasure
Based in France, HumpToy was founded by Kenza, a trained chemist and self-taught maker. Born from a personal need, her approach reflects a dynamic still marginal in the industry: abstract shapes, artisanal production, and a strong ethical commitment at every step. Each model is designed as a modular object, open to imagination and free from usual gendered codes.
Entirely solo crafted, each toy is modeled, molded, and poured by hand in her workshop. No imposed storytelling, no hyper-realistic designs: HumpToy claims a sober, inclusive approach that deeply respects both bodies and materials.
An Artisanal, Ethical, and Fully Free Approach
- Abstract and Customizable Shapes: Each model can be adjusted in size, color, and firmness, with no imposed sexual references.
- Solo Artisanal Production: From design to shipping, everything is done in-house, with no outsourcing or automation.
- Simplicity and Freedom of Use: No added stories or fantasized projections — just objects open to personal appropriation.
- Strong Ethical Commitment: Platinum-cured, degassed silicone, ethically sourced mica, vegan and cruelty-free materials, all in a transparent and safety-first approach.
Through this approach, HumpToy offers another way to think about sex toys: as simple, safe, and deeply personal objects.
A Brand Born from Personal Need and a Free Vision of Pleasure
At HumpToy, everything starts from intimacy. Kenza didn’t launch the project to follow trends or fill a market gap, but to respond to a personal need, rooted in lived experience. This direct relationship to pleasure, without filters or strategies, remains at the heart of the brand today: creating objects designed first and foremost for oneself, with sincerity, curiosity, and commitment.
From Frustration to Creation
The starting point of HumpToy is very concrete: Kenza was looking for a suction cup dildo but couldn’t find anything that worked for her. The available offer seemed monotonous and uninspiring. “Honestly, it all started because I was looking for a toy for myself. Specifically, a suction cup dildo. But I was disappointed to realize that like 95% of the toys out there looks like a penis. And that just wasn’t doing it for me. I wanted something more abstract, something that gave room for imagination so I could really focus on my own pleasure.” She then realized that if she wanted an object that reflected her desires, she would have to make it herself.
This realization came at the right time. Kenza had just finished her master’s degree in analytical chemistry and had a 3D printer. The technical foundation was there. “Then I looked at my 3D printer, it looked back at me, and I was like, ‘Why don’t I make my own? A shape I would actually love.’” She began creating molds, experimenting with materials, and brought her first models to life. At the start, the goal was simple: to make a toy for herself, with no commercial intent.
But very quickly, she began sharing her creations online. The response was enthusiastic. “I already had the molds, so why not keep using them! And that’s how HumpToy was born.” What started as a response to a personal frustration gradually became an artisanal journey. The project has kept this essence: offering open-ended, non-gendered shapes that are both functional and free for personal interpretation.
The HumpToy Approach
What sets HumpToy apart isn’t just the originality of its shapes, but the way they are designed. Kenza doesn’t start with a strict brief or marketing analysis. Her logic is intuitive, almost organic. “I work based on vibes. I’ll see a shape, a texture, some random everyday thing, and think, ‘Hmm… what if that was made of silicone? Would it feel good?’” Each idea arises from a sensory urge, a curiosity, sometimes sparked by a simple object encountered in daily life.
But this spontaneity is always framed by rigorous technical mastery. Kenza models her designs in 3D, prints prototypes, hand-smooths them, creates molds, degasses the silicone, and controls every step of production. The process is slow, sometimes frustrating. “3D printing, smoothing out the models, making molds… It takes time, and no matter how experienced you get, there’s always a little chaos. I’ll set a print to run overnight and wake up to a ‘spaghetti’ mess instead.” Yet she insists on keeping control over everything. The result: toys designed to be safe, durable, and true to her vision.
HumpToy stands for an uncompromising artisanal approach, far from standardized industry trends. Each model is developed with a focus on real-life use: tested, refined, adjusted before being offered for sale. It’s not about filling a catalog or following trends, but about creating sincere objects, with real intention behind every curve. A counter-current method that gives the brand its strong identity.
A Strong and Assumed Ethical Commitment
For Kenza, ethics are not a marketing argument; they are the foundation of her work. All the materials she uses are body-safe, cruelty-free, and free from animal-derived ingredients. “I design these toys like they’re for me (because, well, that’s how it started).” She exclusively uses platinum-cured silicone, which she degasses before each pour to avoid bubbles. This step is crucial: “Skipping that step can lead to air bubbles forming inside the material, which makes the toy porous—creating the perfect environment for bacteria and turning it into a potential health hazard.”
Her commitment extends even to the pigments, a point rarely questioned in the industry. She only uses cosmetic-grade mica powders, free of nanoparticles, not tested on animals, and compliant with European regulations. “They’re primarily sourced from Europe and, in some cases, the U.S., and are guaranteed to be ethically certified, with zero tolerance for exploitation—whether it involves children, animals, or adults.” For her, this transparency is essential because “people don’t always realize it, but the sex toy industry can involve seriously problematic practices.” One example is mica extraction, which in some parts of the world relies on child labor in extremely dangerous conditions.
This vigilance reflects a deeply ethical vision of pleasure. Kenza doesn’t just aim to be “careful”: she sees every material choice as an act of respect. “I’m vegan myself, and I believe pleasure should never come at the cost of someone else, human or animal.” Her standards go beyond the manufacturing stage: “A good toy respects everyone, from start to finish. Pleasure only makes sense when it’s fully consensual, free, and chosen.”
Shapes That Break the Mold, Designed for Exploration
At HumpToy, design isn’t guided by prefab fantasies or coded shapes. Each toy is conceived as an object of exploration, both sensory and personal. Kenza’s creations don’t aim to represent but to suggest, to open up possibilities. This formal freedom comes with a demanding production process, where every step is designed to stimulate curiosity and leave space for individual experience.
Creating by Instinct, Starting from the Real
Kenza follows no predefined design grid. Her creative process often starts with a shape, a texture, or an everyday object that sparks a sensory idea. She builds on this intuitive impression, modeling shapes in 3D over several days until she finds the right balance.
But imagining a shape is only the first step. She then needs to print the model, hand-smooth it, create a silicone mold, and prepare the pours. This entirely artisanal process requires time, attention, and is subject to mishaps. “3D printing, smoothing out the models, making molds… It takes time, and no matter how experienced you get, there’s always a little chaos.” A model can remain stuck at the prototyping stage if the shape doesn’t hold up or the technique isn’t right.
Not all projects make it to production. This selection process is something Kenza fully embraces: it ensures that every object offered is tested, refined, validated in its proportions. The Nexus Grinder, for example, is literally inspired by a computer keyboard. This kind of creative detour is emblematic of HumpToy’s approach: shapes born from a curious eye, carefully translated into objects meant for exploration, with no compromises on quality or intent.
Leaving Room for Imagination
HumpToy’s product pages are deliberately stripped back: no storytelling, no erotic descriptions, just visuals, dimensions, and customization options. This choice isn’t an omission but a strong decision. “Yes, keeping product pages simple is totally on purpose. Just the measurements and visuals, no added story or fantasy. The idea is to let you imagine what you want.” By removing any scripted framework, Kenza opens up a space that’s broader, more accessible, and often more reassuring for people discovering these objects.
This approach speaks to a wide range of audiences, often those unfamiliar with typical sex toy codes. “Some people aren’t into overtly sexual stuff. Like a straight guy trying anal play for the first time might not be into dicks. Or a couple just wanting to stay present in their moment might not want some narrative attached to a toy.” By favoring suggestion over projection, HumpToy invites each person to make the object their own. It’s a discreet but powerful way to champion pleasure that’s free, ungendered, and undirected.
An Emblematic Model: Wonder
If you had to pick just one, it would be the Wonder. This is the model Kenza most recommends to discover the HumpToy universe. Its shape is simple but precise: smooth, slightly narrowed in the middle, with a comfortable tip and a noticeable flexibility. Designed to easily adapt to different body types and uses, it offers a balance of softness, maneuverability, and effectiveness.
Like all the brand’s models, Wonder is fully customizable: size, firmness, color. “It’s simple but oh so effective. It really captures what I’m going for with HumpToy: freedom to imagine, to explore, and feel good every step of the way. A good toy doesn’t boss you around, it adapts to you. It lets you play how you want.” This model embodies the HumpToy spirit: accessible, modular, open — designed for those who want to own their pleasure without feeling steered.
A Solo Adventure, Between Concrete Constraints and Total Freedom
Behind HumpToy, there’s no team, no structure, no strategic plan. There’s just one person who designs, crafts, packages, and communicates. It’s a setup that imposes very real limits but also allows for total freedom. It’s within this tension between autonomy and workload that the project’s fragile — but fully assumed — balance is built.
Working Solo by Choice and Necessity
HumpToy is a project entirely carried by Kenza. From modeling to shipping, including customer service, she handles everything herself. It’s a choice, driven as much by conviction as by practicality. “I’ve chosen to stay solo. It gives me real creative freedom. No compromises, just me making exactly what I want. And that’s something I value deeply.” This solo format guarantees her complete independence in artistic, technical, and ethical decisions.
But this way of working also relies on an economic reality: “Plus, to be realistic, it’s not even possible to expand right now. HumpToy is a passion project, not something I make a living from.” This status limits certain ambitions but maintains a rare flexibility. No pressure to mass-produce, no growth imperatives. The pace is that of a personal workshop, aligned with one main requirement: offering toys that are coherent with the creator’s values.
Communication Isn’t Always Simple
While Kenza masters every step of the making process, communication remains a trickier terrain. She admits it openly: “I’m pretty shy by nature, and I overthink everything, so trying to figure out what to post, whether it’s good enough, if people will like it… it drains me.” Creating regular content doesn’t come naturally to her, and maintaining a presence on social media sometimes clashes with the focus required by her artisanal work.
To that, you can add the restrictions on platforms like Instagram or TikTok, which complicate content visibility, even when the designs are abstract. “Some restrictions can be incredibly discouraging, especially when you’re just trying to share your work. My toys are abstract, and still, they somehow trigger reports? I don’t even know why.” Despite these hurdles, she keeps publishing and maintaining the brand’s presence — but without giving in to the pressure of performance or algorithms.
Sharing to Help an Independent Scene Emerge
HumpToy is not just a personal project: it’s also a way to take part in a larger movement of independence, sharing, and transmission. On her website, Kenza provides resources to help others create their own sex toys. She learned everything herself online and is committed to making that knowledge more accessible. “I learned everything online, and I know just how hard it can be to find reliable info when you’re starting out. That’s why I wanted to share what I’ve picked up—so other creators can jump in too.” Her goal isn’t to keep her know-how to herself but to encourage a more diverse, open scene.
She sees this as both a cultural and practical issue. “For me, seeing more independent makers grow in this space means more innovation, more diversity, and a market that feels a lot more human.” And also a personal wish: “Honestly, I’m a bit of a collector myself, so I’m really hoping to see more European creators pop up. As much as I love what my American peers are doing, I’m getting a little tired of paying massive shipping and customs fees every time I order!” Sharing thus becomes a lever for mutual support, but also for the concrete circulation of objects — and ideas.
Making Room for Chosen Pleasure
HumpToy doesn’t aim to seduce through excess or provoke through fantasy. It’s a brand that moves at its own pace, with seriousness, curiosity, and respect. Kenza offers a rare alternative: objects designed without formatting, intended for those who want to explore without constraints, feel without projections, and imagine without limits.
The message she sends to those still hesitating aligns perfectly with her approach: direct, free, and caring. “To anyone who’s still on the fence about trying a toy, I just want to say: go for it. There’s no ‘right’ way to enjoy pleasure. Everyone has their own desires, preferences, and pace. What matters most is feeling free to explore, to try, to play around. And honestly, if a toy sparks your curiosity, it’s already doing its job. Curiosity is often where pleasure begins.”
HumpToy: A Different Idea of the Sex Toy
No lore to follow, no spectacular designs. HumpToy claims a simple, free, and unimposed approach. Each toy is designed as a sensory exploration object, made to adapt to the body, not to impose an imaginary. This rejection of convention isn’t about minimalism but about a clear and open choice.
Behind every shape lies an entirely artisanal process, carried out solo, with rare attention to materials, details, and coherence. Nothing is left to chance: modeling, testing, pigments, pouring… everything is thought out to guarantee a safe, durable object aligned with deep convictions.
HumpToy doesn’t seek to seduce through one-upmanship but to offer concrete alternatives to an industry too often standardized. Abstract shapes, ethical materials, total freedom of use: it may sound simple, but it’s demanding to maintain. And that’s what makes the approach so strong.
